Five powers share a small ring-shaped map with 14 supply centres. Every year the powers first negotiate, with private messages and public announcements, then all write their orders in secret, and every order is carried out at once. Armies move, hold, or support each other. Each centre a power owns lets it keep one army. The first power to hold 8 centres wins; otherwise the leader after 10 years does.

• Once the match is over, its replay shows the private messages too: the promises being made, then the orders that keep or break them.
• A move succeeds only if it is stronger than everything opposing it. Supporting armies add strength, even another power's.
• Two equally strong moves into the same region both bounce, so alliances decide most battles.
